City Departments

Building Department

The Building Department assists property owners in obtaining the required permits and approvals from the City for new construction, additions, remodeling, heating, plumbing and septic systems.

Fire Department

The 34-member Volunteer Fire Department is well-trained and well-equipped to respond to fire, major medical and vehicle accident calls 24 hours a day. Organized in 1969, the department has a fleet of ten vehicles, and several water sources throughout the city. The Fire Department provides an extensive fire prevention program and fire safety education. Members are also trained in hazardous material spills. As a service to the public, City Hall provides a fire extinguisher check and refill service.

Planning and Zoning Department

The Planning and Zoning Department assists property owners in obtaining the required permits and approvals for plats, lot splits, rezoning, certificates of occupancy, commercial building permits, conditional use permits, home occupation permits and variances.

Police

The City of Ham Lake contracts with the Anoka County Sheriff's Department for police services for 24 hours a day, and has a substation at City Hall. The Sheriff's Department provides coverage in Ham Lake for the other hours, which includes an overlapping shift.

Public Works Department

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining and repairing over 105 miles of city-owned streets, and maintaining and developing the city parks and grounds.
